We are thrilled to introduce RARE (Regenerative Agriculture Research Enterprise):

an open-source, AI-powered library designed to unlock the tens of thousands of smallholder regenerative agriculture studies currently trapped on local servers and in local languages.

What is RARE?

RARE aims to become the world’s largest multilingual, fully searchable database of smallholder regenerative agriculture research, bridging scientific innovation and traditional knowledge to accelerate climate-positive solutions everywhere Regenerative Agriculture….

Why It Matters

  1. Project Developers & Farmers get access to real-world case studies that boost yields, build soil health and diversify income.

  2. Brands & NGOs replace one-size-fits-all programs with practices proven in similar contexts.

  3. Researchers gain a richer corpus for meta-analyses, driving new breakthroughs.

  4. Investors & Donors see clear, field-tested impact metrics (soil organic gains, carbon sequestration), strengthening the business case for funding.

How RARE Works

  1. Hybrid AI Translation

  • LLMs (Large Language Models) give the raw horsepower needed for translation

  • SLMs (Small Language Models) preserve document layout, images and data tables, critical for interpreting field results.

  • RAG-based glossary, ensuring accurate translation of technical and indigenous terms across languages.

  1. Regional Network of Experts for ongoing review and improvement of results, of the glossary of terms, and more.

  1. A coalition of South American academics, agronomists and NGO practitioners will source inaccessible documents, co-curate our glossary with culturally specific terminology, and guide our peer-review and grant processes Regenerative Agriculture….

  1. Open-Source Platform

  2. A cloud-hosted library ingests, translates and indexes tens of thousands of reports, free for anyone to search by keyword, data chart or image. No paywalls. No login fees.

RARE sits at the intersection of AI, open science and regenerative agriculture, but its true power lies in amplifying the voices and innovations of smallholder farmers themselves.

Made possible by a grant from the The VF Foundation, RARE is just getting started, over the next few weeks I’ll be diving into the results of our feasibility study, our Phase 1 roadmap, and how you can join.

What questions do you have about RARE?
